FAQ

Questions and answers

Can I remove a tree myself?

Small saplings and low shrubs, maybe. Anything taller than you can reach from the ground is another matter. Do not climb with a chainsaw, and do not cut near power lines, fences or your house. Trees can twist, split and kick back as they fall. Compare written estimates from providers in our network, then decide. Safe ground first.

What can I safely do to help before the crew arrives?

Stick to ground work. Move cars, patio furniture and play sets out of the drop zone. Bring pets inside. Take photos of the tree from several sides, and note cracks, leaning or dead limbs. Do not stand under the tree to inspect it, and do not trim limbs yourself. Share your notes so each estimate is more accurate.

How can I tell if a tree is risky before a storm?

Watch for a sudden lean, cracks in the trunk, mushrooms at the base, lifted soil near the roots, or many dead branches. Hot humid summers and strong thunderstorms add stress. Do not top a tree or pile mulch against the trunk. Ask a local provider to look at it and give you a written opinion.

What should I do if a tree falls on my house?

Get everyone out of the area. Treat any downed wire as live and stay far back. Do not try to lift or cut the tree. Call 911 for fire, injury or sparks. Then take photos from a safe spot and Request a callback to check provider availability for emergency tree removal.

How long does tree removal usually take?

Many jobs take a few hours. Big trees, tight yards or heavy cleanup can take longer. After a storm, storm tree clearance may depend on how many homes need help at once. Ask each provider for a time window in writing so you can compare.

How much does tree removal cost?

Costs vary by job. In the U.S., small trees often run a few hundred dollars. Medium trees commonly land in the high hundreds to low thousands. Large, leaning or hard-to-reach trees can cost more. Height, location, power lines and cleanup all matter. Get a written quote from each provider and compare what is included before you say yes.

Is stump grinding included with tree removal?

Not always. Many providers price stump grinding as a separate line. Some bundle it, and some skip it. A stump can attract pests and trip people, so decide early. Typical U.S. prices vary by stump size and access. Ask each written estimate to say whether grinding and wood chip cleanup are included.

Will my insurance pay for tree removal?

It depends on your policy. Some policies may cover sudden damage, like a tree falling on a roof or fence. Removing a healthy tree usually is not covered. Check your policy or ask your insurer before work begins. Providers can often help document damage for a claim with photos and a written description of the job.
